The Evergreen Chorale presents the Tony Award-winning musical Quilters, a unique western musical that premiered 30 years at the Denver Center Theater Company. Shows run for three weekends beginning, Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Center/Stage Theatre in Evergreen, Colorado and ending with a matinee on March 4th at 2:00 p.m.
Quilters, written by Barbara Damashek and Molly Newman, had a short run on Broadway in 1984, directed by Damashek, who also wrote the music and lyrics. The musical was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The musical depicts the life story of Sarah, a stoic pioneer woman, and six women referred to as her daughters, as they face the challenges of frontier life in the American West. Rather than a straightforward storyline, the musical is presented as a series of short tales and tableaux matched with musical numbers, each presenting an aspect of frontier life or womanhood. The quilt patches or blocks that they depict are intended to represent girlhood, marriage, childbirth, spinsterhood, twisters, fire, illness and death. The patches are ultimately put together to form one dramatic tableau.
Larry Sohrweid returns as director, 16 years after Quilters was last produced at Center/Stage, to create a new version of the show and his wife, Elaine Sohrweid reprises the role of the matriarch Sarah. The daughters are played by Amanda Cyphers, Shelley Krane, Lara Sohrweid, Lisa Hamm-Greenawalt, Janice O’Grady and Norika Zehnder.
Christine Gaudreau is musical director and Cindy Catanese is choreographer.
