One can expect to see bears living in the Evergreen, Floyd Hill, Conifer, and areas beyond. The activity and sightings of Colorado’s black bear population greatly increase at this time of year. Connie Ning, a local altruist, bear advocate, and aficionado is hoping to educate her community about bears and reduce unfortunate bear encounters. She intends to do so through a new book club she started with Wild Aware founder and president, Christie Greene under the umbrella of the local non-profit Wild Aware.
Connie states that the goal of The Wild Aware Bear Book Club is to offer like-minded, bear-loving folks in the community a fun way to learn more about these amazing, furry neighbors and how to prevent harmful interactions between humans and bears. The first meeting of 2024 will be on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 5:30 pm. in Connie’s home at 33424 Deep Forest Drive, Evergreen, (303) 670-7171. The program will be a Meet and Greet with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
Connie realized her love of bears after reading the book, “In the Company of Bears: What Black Bears Have Taught Me about Intelligence and Intuition,” by Benjamin Kilham. Connie said, “The book made me realize how intelligent bears are, how much I cared about them, and made me more respectful and more in awe of them.” Along with the determination Connie and Christie have to decrease harmful encounters between humans and bears, they hope to make our community bear smart,
Are you bear smart? Through books, movies, and engaging with expert speakers, Connie’s wish is to spread knowledge on how to peacefully and respectfully coexist with these apex predators.
When you attend The Wild Aware Bear Book Club, Connie asks that participants be prepared for an enjoyable, enthusiastic evening. You are asked to bring a dish to share as each quarterly meeting of the book club will be a potluck aiming to create a cozy and welcoming environment.
